Cheap Insurance!!! But How?

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Cheap insurance is not a secret anymore, just grasp an idea how insurance companies view your profile as a possible risk and what aspects you should look into save your hard earned cash overpaying them. Remember your risk profile is composed of controllable and uncontrollable factors, so try reducing your controllable factors as much as possible to minimise your premiums to acceptable levels.

1- Correct policy, always compare quotes for third party, third party fire and theft and comprehensive before choosing.

2- Monthly payment plans, most companies make you a quote and then put you on a monthly plan, while charging you interest on initial quotation. Eventually you end up paying more at the end of year. Always read terms and conditions very carefully and then decide whether to make lump sum payment or pay in instalments.

3- Tweak your job. Do you know that changing your job title (as a manager can be called administrator) which is acceptable if it convinces general common sense can save you bucks. Make sure you don’t lie or cheat as it invalidates your policy altogether.

4- Market coverage. Checking only one company or comparison site is not enough; always get multiple quotes from different companies. Usually policies are bought for a whole year so spending a couple of hours is not a big deal especially considering the fact that this toil is most likely to save you some decent money. You should try to save money as it can be used on lot of important places, like charity, paying bills, holidays or some extra days out which definitely have more utility then paying those cheeky insurance companies who prey on your ignorance.

5- Specialist covers, like young driver, multi cars or drivers with driving offences. Although you have same risk profile but companies view and explain this in different way e.g. there may be a company which gives discount or don’t penalise a driver who has got only 1 driving offence as contrary to the most companies who offer insurance on inflated prices. It is because they think that most drivers calm down and become more responsible after committing or making mistake of any driving offence.

6- Park and drive carefully. Use and park in your garage or off street parking and don’t forget to mention as it is highly likely to get a discounted quote. When it comes to drive, always drive carefully and responsibly for yourself and other road user’s sake. It has financial benefits also on occasions when you are looking for insurance quotes.

7- Add a 25 plus person. Ideal for newly qualified young drivers. But don’t add anyone who is not going to use same vehicle only for the sake of saving on insurance. As this is called “fronting” and is considered as insurance fraud.

8- Picking right car, using a car which is suitable for your circumstances is best when you are seeking insurance quotations. Imagine 18 year old newly qualified driver buying a super car can have a massively huge insurance bill.

9- Security device, having an additional immobiliser or security device other then a factory fitted one can get you a discounted quote.

10- Mileage, make a careful calculation of your usage of car. Lesser miles means reduced risk as you will be driving volume is low. So companies tend to give you a reduced quote owing to a safer risk profile.

11- Unmodified car, any additional accessories are likely to attract higher premiums.

12- Must tell your insurer any change in circumstances, like change of occupation or change of address. They can impact your premiums and not informing your insurance company can invalidate your policy.

13- Extra excess. Excess is the amount which you commit to contribute when there is a claim. Choosing a suitable access can impact your insurance policy; try different excess amounts to see how it affects quote.

14- Drive some one else’s car on your insurance,as a lot of companies allow you to drive other cars. It reduces your own mileage as mentioned in point no. 10 and so earns benefits.

15- New car free insurance. Some companies offer you free insurance when you purchase their cars. If you can afford to purchase a new car then this can save you some decent amount.

Correct Car Insurance Policy

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

There are 3 types of insurance policies and so think about your circumstances to select most appropriate one. Most people are guilty of picking wrong policies. So read carefully and then decide what suits you.

(a)- THIRD PARTY

Minimum level of cover required to drive legally in UK is called “third party”. A general misconception is that it is always cheapest, most of time that’s correct but not always, so always get quotes for both “third party” and “comprehensive”.

“Third party” covers you for any harm you cause to another person’s vehicle and protection for any passengers in your car. So in case of an accident caused by your fault, you will be responsible for repair or whatever of your own car.

These sorts of policies are most suitable for,
1- Cheap cars worth less than £1000.
2- Aged under 25.
3- Without no-claim bonus.
4- Living in a high risk area

(b)- THIRD PARTY FIRE AND THEFT

This term is self explanatory, you get additional cover of assistance if your car is stolen or is set on fire.

(c)- FULLY COMPREHENSIVE

This is for sure has widest coverage of risks and may or may not be cheapest. So if there is an accident caused by you, you will be able to claim everything, literally. This policy covers you for accidental damage and vandalism and may also be able to drive other cars. Ideal for high value cars.

SUGGESTION

As in case of third party, policy holder takes responsibility of his own car, so it can be expensive occasionally as they can be viewed as high risks, so you are better off checking quotes for both types. Be wary of this point if your age is under 25, because a strong trend of accidents shown in recent years by youngsters having a third party insurance and are found involved in accidents. So car insurance industry has reacted proactively and increased premiums.

REDUCE RISKS,REDUCE BILL PART 1

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Reduce All Possible Risks to Reduce Cost.
Every application for any insurance is treated as different. Insurer’s price depend on two things, first how underwriters assess your particular risk and then price model which tells insurers what sort of customer you are.

Now as some factors related to you are unchangeable like your age, gender and place where you lived plus your past as well. But still there are few things which for sure can be altered e.g.

1- Leave your car in garage or driveway which will save your car from theft and accidental damage, resulting in 3% – 7% drop in insurance costs approximately.

2- Points on driving licence usually get penalised when insurers give you quotes. Speeding points for past 04 years and convictions are checked for last 05 years.
How they affect you?
One speeding conviction affects by 5% but two can make a 20% rise. If you were caught using a mobile can increase your quote double fold.

3- Insuring under 25 is very expensive, so you can add a second driver with a good record even if they don’t regularly use the car. It will soften high risk. But never add your or anyone’s else name as main driver only for the sake of insurance, as it is called fronting fraud and may invalidate you insurance claim in case of any contingency.

4- Always make a sensible decision when you are out and about to buy car, as engine size and value also impact your insurance costs.

5- Having an extra security, other than factory fitted ones like an alarm or immobilizer like Thatcham can reduce bill also.

6- Modified cars cost more so anything in a car which is not part of standard vehicle specification is an extra or modified. Make sure your insurer is well-aware of any modifications.

7- Lesser you drive, cheaper will be your insurance whenever you travel, add price of insurance other than petrol price and keep your mileage as low as possible on your car. You can do this by driving other people cars if your policy allows. If you drive to your work, then declare this. Always keep your insurers up-to-date with your change of circumstances otherwise it is termed as fraud, can prove expensive as it will follow you for life. These circumstances can be changing job or home etc.

Reduce Risks,Reduce Bill Part 2

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

8-Always get a “new” quote from your existing insurer, as companies are more generous for new customers.

9- Always decide prudently what is an ideal extra excess in your circumstances. £250-500 is a decent figure and you can offset some cost.

10- Sometime some companies sell their cars with free benefits like free insurance. It may be worth few hundred quid’s for a white head but may mean thousands for a newly qualified or young driver.

10- Pass plus is also very effective tool to minimise your insurance bill.

11- Go to specialist insurers or ones who give special incentive like cheap woman insurance, multiple car discounts etc.

12- Beware of monthly payment plans as they are a trap. Insurers quote you price and then loans you that amount at some hideous rate, so practically charging you more than initially quote at the end of policy.

13- Tweak your job if possible as a manager can be called administrator or assistant manager can be called supervisor. But never ever lie. Use common sense.

14- Do a complete or almost complete search of insurance companies in market. We recommend you getting quotes from minimum of 5 comparison sites and brokers/companies. See the options in following paras.

You can expect any insurer or their brokers asking you more or less same questions focussing on above given points or may be adding few other questions.Insurers try to make a picture of you but their appraisal of facts can be different so you get different quotes.
